Studie mapující chování českých médií po 17. listopadu 1989, změny jejich postojů a jejich vliv na průběh politických událostí.
Abstract:
Police action against student´s demonstration on Friday 17 November 1989 launched a chain of events, which resulted in overthrowing of the totalitarian regime by opposition forces led by Civic Forum, and ended in a fundamental change of the political system in former Czechoslovakia. The Civic Forum called a two-hour general strike for Monday 27 November to support set of its demands for transformation of political system and for investigation of police brutality. The outcome of the strike might be crucial for the future political negotiation. The success of the strike was for a several days in doubt due to a hesitation of general public, namely outside of bigger towns and among the working class population. Absence of true information about the events in national media, possible prejudices against the intelligentsia (students, artists) together with fear of possible reprisals from the regime, those were the elements, which might hold back the people to voice their opinion freely. However, the national dailies along with broadcast media were able to shake off the party and governmental control over their content. They were able gradually to extend limits of freedom of the press and of media, and to supply the general public with unbiased and objective information about events in big towns. This process came to a head with the television live coverage of large demonstrations at Letna plain on 25 and 26 November, a day before the general strike. The paper describes step by step changes in behavior of the Czech media with their possible effects on public opinion.
